Médoc Appellation
Médoc is one of the most famous wine regions of Bordeaux. The vineyards stretch along the left bank of the Gironde River and have been divided into northern and southern parts for centuries.
Until 1940, the north was called Bas-Médoc (“Lower Médoc”) and the south was Haut-Médoc (“Upper Médoc”). However, the name “Bas” bothered winemakers – it gave the impression that the wines were of lower quality than those from Haut-Médoc. Therefore, the official designation Bas-Médoc was abolished and today we speak of two appellations: AOC Médoc (encompassing the northern vineyards) and AOC Haut-Médoc (the southern part).
Together, the two form one large Médoc – an area that, thanks to its oceanic climate and diverse soils, produces wines that are elegant, structured and have great aging potential. The differences between the north and the south still remain – Médoc (formerly Bas) offers more accessible and fruitier wines with a higher proportion of Merlot, while Haut-Médoc is home to significantly structured wines dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon.
And we have prepared a selection of bottles for you that will allow you to explore the Médoc across the terroir – from more delicate wines suitable for immediate drinking to noble cuvées with great potential.
