International Merlot Day
Every year on November 7, the wine world celebrates International Merlot Day – a tribute to the grape variety that has become a symbol of softness, elegance, and approachability. The name Merlot, derived from the French word merle (blackbird), belongs to one of the world’s most beloved red varieties and forms the backbone of many of Bordeaux’s finest wines.
The true home of Merlot lies on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, particularly in the appellations of Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, Fronsac, and Lalande-de-Pomerol. Here, the clay-limestone soils and gentle climate give birth to wines with silky tannins, full body, and complex aromas of plum, cherry, violet, and cocoa. Merlot often dominates blends with Cabernet Franc, creating wines that age gracefully while preserving their harmony and depth.
Today, Merlot is cultivated around the globe – from Italy and California to Chile and Australia – yet its most classic and refined expression remains inseparably linked to Bordeaux.
In honour of International Merlot Day, we have curated a special selection of wines that capture the essence of this noble variety – its richness, elegance, and the unmistakable character of its origin.
