Chateau Filhot
Château Filhot is one of the most notable estates in the Sauternes appellation, with a rich history dating back to the mid-17th century. The estate was founded in 1709 and takes its name from Romain de Filhot, a lawyer and one of its early owners. In the 19th century, it was significantly expanded and elevated by the Count de Vaucelles, bringing it close in prestige and quality to the most renowned sweet wines of Bordeaux.
The estate’s vineyards cover more than 60 hectares, planted on clay-limestone and gravel soils. Combined with the unique microclimate of Sauternes, these conditions are ideal for the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). The varietal composition is traditional for the region: mainly Sémillon (about 60%), complemented by Sauvignon Blanc (36%) and Muscadelle (4%).
Winemaking at Château Filhot is based on meticulous hand harvesting, carried out in several passes through the vineyards to select only the grapes perfectly affected by noble rot, ensuring high concentration of sugars and aromas. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for 18 to 24 months, which brings depth, complexity, and excellent ageing potential.
The wines of Château Filhot are a classic expression of Sauternes: golden in color, with rich aromas of candied fruit, honey, and spice, balanced by fine acidity. Thanks to their elegance and harmony, they are highly regarded among Bordeaux sweet wines, suitable for both long cellaring and immediate enjoyment.
