2012
Vintage Quality: Good
Current Status: Ready to drink, suitable for further aging
The 2012 vintage in Bordeaux was small and challenging in places, but it still had its great moments.
Spring was difficult with wet conditions, but summer brought better weather. The harvest was later than usual, with Merlot recovering thanks to September rains and being harvested in good condition. Cabernet Sauvignon, which ripens later, faced issues with moisture and rot, requiring careful selection. Yields were slightly lower.
Red wines were somewhat more inconsistent, with Merlot-dominant blends generally performing better than those with a high proportion of Cabernet. In the typically Cabernet-dominated Left Bank appellations, the best wines—unsurprisingly—came from the best vineyards, and some excellent wines were produced. However, wines from poorer, less prestigious terroirs were generally less successful and could have green, astringent notes. The appellations Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe, and Margaux all delivered quality wines, and the best examples had a balanced and refined structure with a clear focus on fruit.
White wines were generally very good, especially from Pessac-Léognan, Graves, and Entre-deux-Mers. For red wines, Merlot-dominant blends fared better. The best wines from the Left Bank appellations had a balanced and refined structure.
The 2012 vintage offers excellent dry white and red wines, and the best wines may offer excellent value for money. Many wines should now be in a good state for drinking, and the best should have the potential for further aging.
